Thermoplastic crosswalks have good performance lives even in northern climates. The thick plastic sheet melted into the pavement surface typically has a durable bond. If the bond breaks, which can happen on an older surface; existing pavement markings; uneven compaction; or uneven infrared heating, the plastic can loosen. Flexing caused by vehicle tires can cause pieces to break away. In the photograph, snowplows have sheared off pieces of the plastic sheeting.
Fortunately, repairs are easily made. The area is power washed to clean the surface and to remove any additional loose sheeting. The pavement is then heated with a torch. New plastic sheets are fitted into place and the grid pattern and plastic is reheated and compacted.
